xrandr is the configuration tool to the RandR extension of the X Window System.

Installation

Arch Linux

pacman -S xorg-xrandr

Debian

apt-get install xrandr

Usage

List monitors

xrandr

Activate a monitor and set it as primary monitor

xrandr --output <monitor-id> --auto --primary

Set position of a monitor next to another one

Set the <monitor-id2> to the left of the monitor with the ID <monitor-id>

xrandr --output <monitor-id2> --left-of <monitor-id>

autorandr

Installation

Arch Linux

Install the autorandr package.

Usage

Save the current configuration

autorandr --save <profile name>

Detect profile and load it

autorandr --change

Manually load a profile

autorandr <profile name>
